About Us

Coulsdon Coppice is a small area of ancient woodland, about six acres in size, located in Old Coulsdon in Surrey.

The wood was left over following the development of the surrounding area and is situated between Coulsdon Road to the east, Birchfield Close to the west, Rutherwick Rise to the north and Stoneyfield Road to the south.

Due to the continued threat of development of the wood, local residents decided to form an action group in 1984 in order to keep the area as a nature reserve.  London Wildlife Trust currently holds the lease to the Coppice from Croydon Council.  In order to assist with the future preservation and management of the woodland, a group of local residents have formed the Coulsdon Coppice Friends Group.  The inaugural committee meeting took place on 11th February 2012.

The Group meets regularly at Coulsdon Coppice to undertake different tasks to help look after the woodland, including litter picking, clearing the footpaths to maintain access to the Coppice for the general public and occasionally planting saplings. Around 100 small saplings were planted in 2021. These included woodland trees - oak, beech, hornbeam, common alder and silver birch - and hedging trees, planted by some pupils from Oasis Academy Byron - hawthorn, hazel, dogwood, dogrose, crab apple. In February 2022, around 100 hedging saplings (the same species as in 2021 but with goat willow instead of crab apple) were planted by some Scout leaders and scouts.
